BYD recalls almost 100k EVs in China; PH units not affected

Total of 96,714 Dolphin and Atto 3 EVs affected

Manufacturing hiccups do occur even with the world’s leading car brands. And this time, it’s BYD who’s facing one of the largest recalls in its history.

BYD has filed a recall that affects a total of 96,714 units, where the Dolphin and Atto 3 (called Yuan Plus in PRC) models are involved.

The problem stems from the defect found in the manufacturing process of the electric power steering column assembly controller or the CEPS. According to the statement, the capacitor on the controller’s circuit board could develop microcracks that could trigger a short circuit, causing the capacitors to overheat, burn, or catch fire.

Two BYD operating entities are conducting the recall, with BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd recalling 87,762 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs made between February 4 and December 26, 2023, and BYD Auto Co. Ltd recalling 8,952 Yuan Plus EVs made between November 2, 2022, and June 19, 2023.

As a countermeasure, BYD has commissioned dealers to install additional insulation gaskets on the controller to eliminate the potential safety hazard and this will be done free of charge to affected customers.

While both models are being exported by BYD in overseas markets such as the Philippines, we clarified with AC Mobility and they confirmed that Philippine models are not part of the recall.
