Legendary BMW tuner AC Schnitzer is calling it quits

For BMW enthusiasts, AC Schnitzer is more than just a tuning company; it’s a performance institution. Its signature five-spoke forged wheels, from the iconic Type I, II, and III to the modern AC1 and AC4, have long been the go-to choice for drivers seeking lightweight performance, precision engineering, and unmistakable style.

After nearly four decades of tuning excellence, German BMW specialist AC Schnitzer is shutting down operations by the end of 2026. The announcement comes as the family-owned KOHL Group explores selling the brand name while existing inventory continues to move through the year.

Rising costs, volatile exchange rates, U.S. tariffs, and a slow domestic parts approval system left ACS struggling to keep pace with international competitors.

Managing Director Rainer Vogel noted that Germany’s regulatory timelines meant ACS often launched aftermarket parts eight to nine months behind rivals, an insurmountable disadvantage in the fast-moving tuner market.

ACS’s decline also reflects shifts in the automobile industry: the phasing out of combustion engines, a shrinking domestic market, and a younger generation less connected to traditional tuning culture. “We have not succeeded in inspiring young customers to enjoy sporty driving with our brand to the same extent as their fathers’ generation did,” Vogel admitted.

Founded in 1987 in Aachen, ACS built a legacy beyond aftermarket kits. The company raced E30 M3s in the original DTM, ran Nürburgring endurance programs, set speed records with modified M6s and 335is, and even tuned MINIs, GR Supras, and Range Rovers.

Their comprehensive approach, engine upgrades, suspensions, aero kits, and forged wheels earned ACS a reputation as BMW’s unofficial performance arm, with parts even sold through official dealerships.

The closure marks the end of an era for a tuner that defined German automotive performance for generations. KOHL Group promises continued support for existing ACS products through 2026, but the era of AC Schnitzer-built BMWs will soon be history.
