Another new importer to bring GAC Aion EV brand to PH

We can expect more electric vehicles (EVs) to populate our roads soon. Recently, a fleet of EVs was spotted being transported on Philippine roads. Based on the looks and badges of the mystery vehicles, it seems GAC Motor's Aion brand will soon go on sale in the country.

No official details have been shared yet, although we do know that the Aion brand will be distributed by another company, not Astara Philippines, which handles GAC Motor. For now, the importer doesn't want to make itself known, although we won't be surprised if they soon drop official teasers.

The vehicles recently spotted in the country look to be the Aion Y SUVs, which combine a funky-looking exterior, a minimalist cabin, and an all-electric powertrain. No specifications are available yet, but a quick look at what other markets get gives us a general idea of what to expect.

Starting with the powertrain, it's powered by a 63.2 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery that drives a single electric motor that pushes out 136 PS and 225 Nm of torque. On a full charge, Aion claims the Y EV can cover up to 490 km based on the NEDC cycle. The Aion Y measures 4535mm long, 1870mm wide, 1650mm tall, and has a 2750mm wheelbase.

Inside, the EV comes with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a massive 14.6-inch touchscreen display, a 6-speaker sound system, automatic climate control with rear vents, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, LED ambient lighting, and a power-adjustable driver's seat.

Other details regarding the arrival of the Aion brand are still a mystery. But based on insider info, they might hold the official brand launch before the year ends. We're more curious, however, on how will Aion make itself distinct from GAC Motor. Moreover, will they be able to take on BYD in terms of pricing? Last but not least, we're curious about how will they set up their dealer network in the country.

With more and more EVs starting to populate Philippine roads, the arrival of Aion couldn't come at a better time. The only question now is, will they be able to attract customers who are looking to get a stylish but affordable EV?
