Toyota reveals the all-new Highlander EV

For more than two decades, the Toyota Highlander served as the brand’s most important family vehicles in the North American market. But after four generations, Toyota is now entering a bold new era with the Highlander.

Toyota has revealed the all-new, fifth-generation Highlander as a three-row electric SUV, serving as the latest addition in the brand’s EV lineup for the US market.

The all-new Highlander comes with a new platform, larger proportions, and packing more technology than ever before. Visually, the Highlander follows the new hammerhead front fascia design that was first seen in the Prius from a few years back. Toyota has become more liberal with design as the body has been made more aerodynamically slippery, evidenced by the use of slim DRLs, flush door handles, and sculpted fenders.

Inside, the Highlander comes with large screens for the digital gauge cluster and infotainment, with a 12.3-inch and 14-inch touchscreen, respectively. That said, Toyota still included physical buttons and switches for basic interior controls like the climate setting. Captain’s chairs are standard for the Highlander in the second row, but bench seating is optional in case buyers want seating for seven onboard the SUV.

As for its new electric powertrain, there are two battery sizes available for the Highlander. One is a 77 kWh, and the other is a 95.8 kWh for long-range purposes. The front-wheel-drive version can reach up to 462 km of range, while the all-wheel-drive with the larger battery can reach up to 515 km.

Power output is rated at 338 PS and 438 Nm for the AWD version, while the FWD makes 221 PS and 268 Nm of torque. The electric architecture of the Highlander also allows vehicle-to-load technology that can power appliances or serve as power backup in case of an outage.

AWD equipped models will have features like Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control, while all variants will have the latest in safety and entertainment such as Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and Toyota Audio Multimedia as standard.

The 2027 Highlander will be assembled in the United States at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, with batteries sourced in America from Toyota’s newly opened USD 13.9-billion battery assembly plant in Liberty, North Carolina and a supplier partner. Sales of the new Highlander are expected to begin in late 2026, continuing into early 2027.
