Honda S+ Shift to mimic gear shifting in a hybrid

The Honda Prelude making its return as a production sports coupe has already been confirmed for 2025. With Honda sharing more about what we can expect from it, the new model turns out to be just like its predecessors and will feature Honda’s most advanced systems in terms of innovation.

Honda has confirmed that the all-new Prelude will debut its next-generation e:HEV powertrain. The Japanese manufacturer claims the system will be lighter, more efficient, and with better power output than the current e:HEV fitted to the likes of the CR-V and Civic.

Coming from a brand that was once regarded as one of the most innovative in terms of engine technology, that all sounds like a return to form for Honda. But that’s not all. Honda’s Global Executive Vice President Shinji Aoyama said the all-new Prelude’s transmission would shift differently, along with an engaging sound.

The Honda Prelude for 2026 will also debut the S+ shift mode system, which is an update to the Linear Shift Control feature fitted to current e:HEV models that matches engine revs to the speed of the car. The S+ shift further enhances driver engagement as it features simulated gear shifts with the use of paddle shifters similar to Hyundai’s N e-shift for a sharper feel and more direct engine response in spirited driving scenarios.

When S+ mode is engaged, the engine RPM also synchronizes with the Active Sound Control (ASC) system, where the e:HEV powertrain’s engine sound is enhanced through the use of the car’s speakers.

The “S+ mode” was last used on the Honda CR-Z but performed differently. In the CR-Z, the S+ provided maximum power from the integrated motor assist hybrid system at the push of a button.

Lastly, Honda also said the next-generation e:HEV powertrain will feature a new electric all-wheel-drive system that adds a rear motor. However, the Japanese manufacturer did not specify if the Prelude will get this technology. Honda uses the word “mid-size” for its e:HEV all-wheel-drive, so we reckon we could see it once Honda updates the current-generation CR-V.
