Tourbillon’s V16 Hybrid produces 1800 PS

The time has come for the arrival of Bugatti’s successor to the Chiron.

Say hello to the all-new Bugatti Tourbillon – the next 400+ km/h hypercar from Molsheim. Much like the Veyron and Chiron that came before it, the performance numbers of the newest Bugatti flagship are off the charts. But this time, Bugatti has done away with quad turbos for its new electrified era.

The Tourbillon is powered by a Cosworth-developed 8.3-liter naturally aspirated cross-plane crank V16 engine that produces 986 PS and 900 Nm of torque, and revs up to 9000 rpm. While that may sound miniscule compared to the 1,578 PS Chiron Super Sport, the Tourbillon takes advantage of Rimac’s expertise with EVs as the V16 gets a boost from three electric motors.

There’s a pair of electric motors in front, and a third motor at the back to help spin the rear wheels. With a 25 kWh central-mounted battery pack supplying power, the trio of electric motors add 800 PS to the mix. This results in a combined system output of 1,800 PS, and an all-electric range of up to 59 kilometers. But really, the Tourbillon isn’t about cruising quietly.

Bugatti says at full tilt, the Tourbillon will reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 2 seconds flat. Keep the throttle pinned down, and it will reach 200 km/h in just 5 seconds. 300 km/h? You'll get there in 10 seconds. The 379 km/h top speed is reachable in less than 25 seconds. But with the special Speed Key installed, the Tourbillon will go all the way to an astounding 445 km/h. Talk about warp speed.

What’s even more surprising is that despite gaining a battery and three electric motors, Bugatti says the Tourbillon is lighter than the Chiron. Moreover, the new V16 packaging allowed Molsheim to fit the car with a more ergonomic cabin, dihedral doors, and a lower profile. The Tourbillon’s 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox now sits behind the engine rather than going between the driver and passenger in the Chiron.

On the outside, the Tourbillon still has a striking resemblance to the Chiron with the trademark horseshoe grille. The multiple vents around the car are designed to feed air to the radiators but also to generate downforce.

At the back, the active rear wing can deploy upwards as an air brake, while the new multi-link suspension is 45 percent lighter than the Chiron’s unit.

The watch-inspired name also trickles down to the way the cabin is presented. There’s no screen in sight, and everything you see is analog. The gauge cluster follows the design of a timepiece and is mounted directly to the fixed steering column for an unobstructed view. The glass covering is even made in scratch-resistant sapphire crystal – similar to what watchmakers use for high-end watches. The only digital element is the infotainment screen which is initially hidden but will rotate upwards to give the driver access to smartphone connectivity such as Apple Carplay.

The center console has banks of aluminum switches, rotary knobs, and a crystal lever to start the Tourbillon’s V16. Bugatti Rimac says this was done to give the Tourbillon a timeless look.

While Bugatti has already revealed the Tourbillon, the first 250 production cars will still be delivered by 2026 as Bugatti continues final testing of the hypercar. That means you still have time to save up for the Tourbillon that’s priced at USD 3.9 million.
