Updated Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets better electric-only range, more standard features

After revealing a teaser image of the updated plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossover SUV a few months ago, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has officially taken the covers off the 2025 Outlander. Featuring a (slightly) more powerful and efficient PHEV system, the refreshed crossover is set to deliver a greener driving experience as well as better range.

Starting with the most important upgrades first, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander gets a bigger battery pack that's rated at 22.7 kWh, up from the outgoing 20 kWh. This gives the PHEV up to 86 km of electric-only range (61 km for previous) based on the WLTP cycle. In addition, the Outlander PHEV has a top speed of 135 km/h on battery power alone. Recharging the battery can be done via a Type 2 or CHAdeMO and the vehicle also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) to power up appliances during a blackout.

The 2.4L naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine has been carried over and continues to make 136 PS with 203 Nm of torque. Also carried over are the front & rear electric motors. The front unit puts out 116 PS with 255 Nm of pull while the rear motor produces 136 PS with 195 Nm of torque. Combined, the 2025 Outlander PHEV has a total system output of 306 PS. It now also has an improved overall range of 844 km thanks to a bigger 53-liter fuel tank capacity.

When it comes to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the automaker claims the Outlander PHEV is capable of averaging up to 125 km/L (or 0.8L per 100 km) and emitting only up to 18g of CO2 per kilometer. As before, the Outlander PHEV benefits from several drive modes like EV, Series Hybrid, and Parallel Hybrid.

Besides the powertrain, Mitsubishi also retuned the suspension of the 2025 Outlander PHEV to deliver a better. This was made possible thanks to lightweight and rigid aluminum suspension components. Drive modes such as Normal, Eco, Power, Gravel, Snow, and Mud are available as well to ensure traction over any terrain.

Style-wise, the 2025 Outlander PHEV relatively remains the same as it only features minor changes. These include a redesigned grille with active shutters, new 6-spoke alloy wheels that measure 20 inches, a new Moonstone Gray paint finish, and tweaked LED headlights & taillights with clearer lenses.

Hop aboard and the Outlander PHEV gets a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system – replacing the previous 9-inch unit. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto and comes with a new 8-speaker Yamaha sound system. This makes the updated Outlander PHEV the latest Mitsubishi to have Yamaha speakers after the XForce.

With the 2025 Outlander PHEV now available in Japan, does this mean Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) could eventually bring the refreshed crossover SUV here? For now, all we can do is hope and wait for MMPC to make it a reality.
