2021 Volkswagen Tiguan looks like a Golf on stilts

Volkswagen has been on a roll this 2020. Earlier this year, they launched the Caddy MPV and the 462 horsepower Touareg R SUV. Last week, they revealed the updated Arteon which is now available as a wagon/shooting brake. Now, the German marque has given the popular Tiguan crossover a brand new look both inside and out.

Interestingly, the refreshed Tiguan now looks like the latest Golf VIII albeit on stilts. Upfront, it gets a new set of LED headlights paired with a larger front grille. To further enhance the sleek looks of the crossover, the bumper has also been restyled with larger vents. At the rear, it gets a new set of LED taillights together with a “TIGUAN” badge on the trunk lid just below the VW emblem. New wheels are available ranging from 17-inch up to 20-inch units depending on the trim level. For an even sportier look, the new R and R-Line variants (seen in the photos) get an even more aggressive-looking bumper.

While the exterior changes on the Tiguan aren’t as extensive, most of the upgrades can be found inside. A digital cockpit now comes standard similar to what you’d find on the new Golf. It features a new multifunction steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons paired with a new 8.0 or 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Meanwhile, a new center stack houses the new touchscreen infotainment system with Volkswagen MIB3 as standard.

To keep occupants safe, Volkswagen’s Travel Assist safety suite is now offered on the Tiguan as well. It features adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist which can take over vehicle control at speeds of up to 210 km/h.

Powering the refreshed Tiguan is the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder which continues to produce 184 PS and 300 Nm torque as the pre-facelift model. Over in Europe, customers will be getting the more powerful Tiguan R with 320 PS on tap. A plug-in hybrid variant is also available with 245 PS.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely we will be getting this refreshed Tiguan anytime soon. The current model Tiguan being offered by Volkswagen Philippines is the previous-generation longer wheelbase model. The rest of the world, however, will get the updated Tiguan in late 2021.
