Toyota PH finally retires 3.0L diesel for Land Cruiser Prado

When the refreshed Toyota Land Cruiser Prado first made its way to the Philippines three years ago, we were expecting it to be equipped with the 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter turbo-diesel; the same one found in the second generation Fortuner. Initially making 177 PS with 450 Nm of torque, it clearly had more power and grunt than the 3.0-liter 1KD-FTV which only made 163 PS and 410 Nm of torque.

Sadly, the PH-spec Land Cruiser Prado continued to soldier on with the 1KD-FTV turbo-diesel. There is an option for a gasoline V6, but if you wanted a diesel, your only choice was the 3.0-liter and nothing else.

Now, Toyota Motor Philippines has quietly launched the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado, and it now has the more powerful 2.8-liter turbo-diesel. But instead of producing 177 PS and 450 Nm of torque, the updated Land Cruiser Prado now gets the same amount of power as the recently-launched Fortuner. This means the SUV's engine now puts out 204 PS at 3400 rpm, along with 500 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. Also gone is the old five-speed automatic transmission. Replacing it is a newer six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift.

Don't expect to find a stickshift of the 2.8-liter Land Cruiser Prado, however, as TMP decided to remove the six-speed manual turbo-diesel variant altogether.

With the Land Cruiser Prado getting a more powerful turbo-diesel heart, the Land Cruiser 2.8-liter variant now has a sticker price of PhP 4,170,000. This translates to a PhP 69,000 price increase over the older 3.0-liter version. At its current price, this puts the diesel-powered LC Prado near the territory of the Land Cruiser 200 Base which currently has a suggested retail price of PhP 4,584,000.

As for those that prefer a gasoline engine under the hood of the Land Cruiser Prado, TMP is still offering the 4.0-liter V6 version. The 1GR-FE V6 continues to make 275 PS and 381 Nm of torque and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. But unlike the diesel version which retails at nearly PhP 4.2 million, the gasoline version is priced at PhP 3,369,000, a PhP 6,000 increase from before.
